Apply for a bursary to study towards a FET certificate in a technical field for 2012

Calling all mathematics and science students in Carnarvon, Van Wyksvlei and Williston interested in pursuing a career as an Artisan.

South Africa has been shortlisted to host the largest telescope in the world, the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) and is designing and constructing one of the world's most sensitive centimetre telescope, the Karoo Array Telescope (MeerKAT).

The SKA and MeerKAT will need qualified Artisans for the construction and maintenance of the telescope facilities in the following fields:

  • Welding
  • Plumbing
  • Electrical
  • Bricklaying
  • Carpentry
  • Motor Mechanic

Note:

  • Applicants must be from Carnarvon, Van Wyksvlei and Williston
  • Applicants must have passed mathematics and science at grade 11 level
  • Successful bursary applicants will initially be funded for the theory component of their studies and thereafter students who pass will be considered for in-service training with one of the construction companies contracted to the SA SKA project. This training will take place onsite at the MeerKAT facility.
