About the Position SARAO has a vacancy for a Programme Manager: Corporate Communication and Media Liaison to join our Communications department reporting to the Head: Communications & Science Engagement. The main purpose of this role is to develop, lead and manage the SARAO corporate communication strategy.

Minimum education required:

  • Degree in Corporate Communication/ Marketing/ Public Relations or Communications/ Journalism or Science Communication/Public Engagement

Minimum work experience and additional requirements:

  • 10+ years’ experience in science communication/ public engagement, of which five plus years’ have been in a management position
  • Valid Driver’s Licence
  • Willing and able to travel extensively within South Africa, and to a lesser extent internationally

Desirable additional education, work experience & personal qualities:

Work experience:

  • Minimum 5 years’ leading dynamic, cross-functional and inter-organisational events/ projects
  • Existing networks in, and sound working knowledge of, the science communication/ public engagement sector in South Africa
  • Experience in science communication/ public engagement in the scientific research sector in South Africa will be distinct advantage

Professional Qualities:

  • Excellent inter-personal skills
  • Excellent networking skills
  • Excellent command of spoken and written English (written and spoken). The ability to communicate in Afrikaans and other South African official languages will be an advantage
