About the Position

SARAO has an exciting opportunity for a Radio Frequency (RF)/Electronics Technician to join our team based in Hartebeeshoek, Gauteng. The primary objective of the role is to ensure electronic systems on the 26 and 15 meter and the new VGOS antennas are functioning at all times (maintenance and upgrades).

Minimum education requirement:

  • National Diploma in Electrical Engineering (Light Current) or Electronics Engineering

Minimum work experience required:

  • 3 years’ experience in a similar role

Desirable additional educational, work experience, and personal qualities:

  • BTech in Electrical Engineering (Light Current) or Electronics Engineering

Duties include (but not limited to):

  • Must be comfortable working at heights
  • Conduct routine maintenance, upgrades and repairs to electronic systems
  • Take responsibility for building and development of new electronic systems for the different Antennas presently used at HartRAO
  • Supervise and train technical staff
  • Ensure spares and components are kept in stock and assist in the procurement process where necessary
  • Operate VLBI night shifts when required

The ideal candidate will have the following competencies:

Ability to:

  • supervise and mentor other less experienced technicians
  • communicate effectively (written and verbal)
  • pay attention to detail
  • and desire to learn new skills (pertinent to radio astronomy)
  • maintain and repair complex electronic systems used in radio astronomy and space geodesy research

Experience in:

  • building ‘one off type’ projects (good wiring skills and PCB layout design)

Knowledge of:

  • repair down to component level, including surface mount components
  • microprocessor hardware and software
  • RF and microwave principles
  • a wide range of electronics (analogue and digital)
  • fibre optics
  • surface mount components
  • standard laboratory test equipment – how to operate, maintain and repair
  • mechanical systems basics
  • antennas and cryogenic systems
  • vacuum/helium systems
