About the Position SARAO has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Technologist – Information and Communications Technology (ICT) to join our team. The work includes a combination of engineering functions of design, research and development, planning, project management, measurement and testing, commissioning, quality assurance and any other activities which require a high level of competence. The candidate shall establish a Key User Group (KUG) for consultation on ICT services in accordance with the adopted Integrated Environmental Management Plan (IEMP) for the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) Phase 1. The main purpose of the role is to identify, design, deploy and operate various solutions of ICT that do not interfere with science activities in the declared Astronomy Advantage Areas.

Minimum education required:

  • MTech/MEng in Electrical and Electronic Engineering
  • Professional Engineering Technologist/Professional Engineer

Minimum work experience required:

  • At least 10 years’ experience working within Information and Communications Technology Environment, with at least 5 years of those 10 years working in Engineering Project Management and 5 year in System Engineering or Networks Architect.

Desirable additional education, work experience & personal qualities:

The preferred candidate is a person who will be able to communicate with the farming communities in the declared Karoo Astronomy Advantage Areas, which is predominantly Afrikaans speaking.

The following additional qualifications are desirable:

  • PhD in Wireless communication is advantageous

The incumbent shall have the following competencies:

  • Be expertly skilled in wireless communication systems and mobile radio communications systems
  • Good understanding of communications satellite, cellular phone communications system, and mobile radio communication system
  • Experience in the technical processes: Stakeholder Requirements Definition, Requirements Analysis, Architecture Design, Project Implementation, System Integration, Verification of Specification Requirements, Validation of Stakeholder Requirements, Transitions to the new systems and Business plans.

The incumbent shall have the following qualities:

  • Collaborating with the local community to create Win-Win relationships
  • Understanding of the ICT Policy, Electronic Communications Act and Astronomy Advantage Geographic Advantage Act
  • Understanding electromagnetic interference and radio frequency interference
  • Ability to work independently
  • Strong problem solving abilities
  • Good communications and interpersonal skills
